Officially, it's Kampung Letung, located on the island of Jemajah, that tends to be considered as the heart of Anambas. Hence the decision, taken years ago, to develop the main Anambas airport on this island, as opposed to the more populated island of Siantan.
Of course Jemajah's wide open space and fewer hilly peaks than on Siantan also helped nudge that decision in favor of Letung.

However, for all intents and purposes, it's Tarempa where most of the action takes place, not only in terms of local governance, but also when it comes to retail, food and drink, as well as with regards to general tourism options.
Effectively, Tarempa's larger population has resulted in a more varied availability of goods and services here. Things in Tarempa are a little more bustling than in Letung, although obviously, Tarempa is still as much a kampung to this day and still retains much its easy-going kampung charm.

Better still, Tarempa is endowed with a hinterland area that's full of interesting must-sees and fascinating must-dos. For example, the very jungle that cradles our kampung is one of the few jungles in the world blessed with the presence of Rafflesia, the world's largest flower.
There's also Temburun waterfall, a geological marvel with no fewer than 7 distinct cascades. Sure, the water levels have dropped somewhat recently, presumably the result of climate change, but Temburun is still just as worthy of a visit as before, not the least because of the sight's tranquil and scenic picnic spots.
